Peter J. Embí

Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Professor of Medicine, and Senior Vice-President for Research and Innovation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center

Dr. Peter Embí is an internationally recognized physician, researcher, educator, and leader in the field of biomedical and health informatics, with hundreds of peer-reviewed publications and presentations describing his innovations in the field. His particular areas of interest include clinical and translational informatics, research informatics, public health informatics, informatics ethics and governance, and the creation of data-driven learning health systems. 
 

Dr. Embí serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics, Professor of Medicine, and Senior Vice-President for Research and Innovation at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Prior to assuming this role on Jan 1, 2022, he served as President and CEO of the Regenstrief Institute, Professor and Associate Dean for Informatics and Health Services Research at the Indiana University School of Medicine, Associate Director at Indiana CTSI and Vice President for Learning Health Systems at IU Health. Previous academic leadership roles included professorships and serving as the nation’s first Chief Research Information Officer at The Ohio State University, and on the faculty of the University of Cincinnati, where he was the founding director of the UC Center for Health Informatics. Dr. Embí also has experience in a variety of entrepreneurial activities, including co-inventing and co-founding health IT-based startups, partnering with companies to create and evaluate health care innovations, and developing programs that guide and enable other faculty to translate their discoveries into practice.

 

Dr. Embí is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics, a Fellow of AMIA, and a Fellow of the International Association for Health Sciences Informatics. Among his other leadership roles, he was the Past President and Chair of the Board of Directors of AMIA and is President-Elect of the American College of Medical Informatics. He has served on many national advisory boards, including on the National Advisory Council for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Board of Scientific Counselors to the National Library of Medicine. 
 

Dr. Embí is also a leader in the ethical and effective development, use and governance of Health AI. He leads multiple initiatives to deploy and test Health AI solutions in practice, develop novel approaches to operationalize the concept of algorithmovigilance for ongoing monitoring of AI solutions in healthcare, which he coined, and to create a maturity model to measure health system readiness for Health AI procurement, deployment and monitoring. He is a founding member representative to the Coalition for Health AI (CHAI), and he currently serves on multiple National Academy of Medicine (NAM) initiatives advancing trustworthy AI, including as a member of the NAM’s Artificial Intelligence Code of Conduct Steering Committee, co-Chair of the NAM Digital and Data Architecture Workstream for the Commission on Investment Imperatives for a Healthy Nation, and member of the NAM’s LLM/Generative AI in Health and Medicine committee.
