Title: Nurse-Led Innovation Transforming Care Delivery Through Human-Centered Design

Description: Using human-centered design concepts, this nurse-led innovation guided the creation of a new care delivery model using virtual care. Emerging from a global pandemic with limited resources and a new comfortability with virtual technology, we sought an innovative process to supplement care delivery and staffing to impact patient safety and quality as well as support the already stretched resources at the bedside. This innovation began as a 90-day virtual care pilot for two acute care floors in a large urban hospital with the goal in mind of supporting bedside staff with documentation, admissions, discharges and chart reviews. Development of the scope of the virtual care team was staff-driven and created with the end user in mind. The ideas shaped in the pilot have now expanded to all adult acute care and critical care settings across five hospitals with the additional goals of improving quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of care provided through a collaborative practice with bedside staff. The project culminated in the creation of a state-of-the-art 5,000 square foot command center as a communication and collaboration hub for the multidisciplinary virtual team.
