Title: Implementation Update–IEEE Standard for Securing Clinical Internet of Things

Description: At HIMSS23 we provided an overview on the work that the IEEE P2933 Working Group had completed to draft the standard for Clinical Internet of Things (IoT) security. The IEEE P2933 Clinical IoT standard is built around the framework of the TIPPSS principles (Trust, Identity, Privacy, Protection, Safety, Security) for Clinical Internet of Things (IoT) data and device validation and interoperability. This includes wearable clinical IoT and interoperability with healthcare systems including EHR, EMR, other clinical IoT devices, in-hospital devices, and future devices and connected healthcare systems. In this HIMSS24 session we will cover the current status of the standard effort, provide a brief overview of what has happened in the past year, and discuss the path to bringing the proposed standard to approval as an international IEEE standard.

Level: Intermediate

Format: 60-Minute Lecture

Learning Objective #1: Discuss the creation of a standard to protect Internet of Things devices and data in a clinical setting

Learning Objective #2: Define the scope of the IEEE Clinical IoT standard using the TIPPSS principles (Trust, Identity, Privacy, Protection, Safety, Security) for Clinical Internet of Things data and device validation and interoperability

Learning Objective #3: Explain the process to create the standard and what steps are remaining to finalize the standard and achieve adoption

Learning Objective #4: Describe why the creation of the Clinical IoT data and device TIPPSS standard is important

Learning Objective #5: Illustrate use cases for the Clinical IoT data and device standard and how they protect patient safety
