Title: Empowering and Retaining Nurses to Improve Patient Experiences

Description: Post-pandemic, healthcare organizations face pressing nurse workforce challenges. According to the 2023 State of Nursing report, 79 percent of U.S. nurses perceive units as understaffed, and 91 percent believe the nursing shortage is worsening. Globally, 40–80 percent of nurses report psychological distress symptoms, according to the International Council of Nurses. Burnout stems from heavy workloads, pandemic-induced mental strain and technology hurdles. Sherri Hess, CNIO at HCA Healthcare, shares workforce insights and tactics used during this challenge. Claire Reilly RN, MSc, CNIO at Imprivata, collaborates as a strategic cybersecurity partner, sharing insight on the power of technology in empowering nurses. In the first 20 minutes of this session, presenters will discuss the factors prompting nurses to exit and the influence this has on patient outcomes. In the 40-minute Essential Conversation segment, attendees engage in small breakout groups to address three key questions around the following topics: enhancing nurse satisfaction and building a culture of safety, the influence of technology on nurse experiences, and methods for assessing ongoing nurse satisfaction. Group insights are then shared, offering diverse perspectives. Time will also be allocated to discuss the unique external challenges healthcare faces when making these decisions.
