Title: Achieving a Collaborative Approach to Meaningful Interoperability Across Canada

Description: The lack of interoperability standards has challenged Canadian healthcare systems for decades, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, as patients were continually transferred to those hospitals with open beds. At the same time, their health information was left behind. Organizations have tried various attempts to share patient information point-to-point between neighboring hospitals and clinics, but these processes were often too narrow and cumbersome. This presentation will highlight how a group of Ontario hospitals took the lead in partnering with the private sector to establish an ambitious new data exchange network that has the potential to connect all participating healthcare organizations across Ontario and eventually Canada through a federated, query-based model. The connection would also close the gap with the more than 300 long-term care organizations across the province to support more seamless care transitions. With a record locator service as the foundation of this new infrastructure, organizations can now look beyond regional exchange by establishing a single connection to all participating organizations, regardless of location or vendor. You’ll hear from the healthcare organization champion and early adopter of this new solution, along with the EHR vendor and interoperability provider that worked to develop it.

Level: Introductory

Format: 60-Minute Lecture

Learning Objective #1: Assess options for connecting to a federated, query-based model for patient record exchange

Learning Objective #2: Differentiate between one-to-one connections and a one-to-many approach

Learning Objective #3: Identify strategies for onboarding staff on this data exchange model and incorporating this data into clinician workflow

Learning Objective #4: Examine implications for security and patient consent and how to position the benefits to your patients to ensure opt-in

Learning Objective #5: Appraise the impact of a Record Locators Service approach compared to a traditional geo-fencing model
