Title: Clinical Decision Support Standards for Incorporating Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Description: Artificial Intelligence encompasses a wide range of technologies, from static decision rules and rule-based systems to sophisticated machine learning applications that generate classifiers based on large data repositories. Capable of representing both healthcare data and knowledge, Health Level Seven International’s FHIR® standard has become the new standard for the exchange of healthcare information. While interoperability is a very important goal, another key objective is leveraging investments in healthcare IT to improve quality and safety. This latter goal requires effective clinical decision support (CDS), which in turn can be implemented using a variety of AI technologies. Therefore, there is a need to explore how CDS can be delivered within an evolving ecosystem that is centered on HL7® FHIR®®. The role of specific HL7® CDS standards will be reviewed to facilitate uptake by vendors and use by healthcare organizations in order to achieve quality goals. These include Clinical Quality Language, CDS Hooks, Arden Syntax and the Info button standard. The speakers will provide illustrations that demonstrate how these standards can be used to implement CDS to promote healthcare quality improvement with an emphasis on their utility for leveraging AI to facilitate knowledge-based interventions.
